Pastors Susie and Joseph Cobb have dedicated over 60 years to faith and service. Susie, the first woman ordained by the South Carolina State Convention, has pastored Agape Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for more than 30 years, championing women’s ministries and lifting others through song. Joseph, a lifelong community organizer, served in key church leadership roles and helped expand ministries across South Carolina. Together they sponsored refugee families, mentored young people—including their five children—and continue to encourage others. Now in their 80s, they remain steadfast: “Never give up. Stand for truth. People need people.”

For over 50 years, Gary and Jeanette White have served their church and community with humility and joy. They met at Lincoln University, bonded over shared values, and settled in St. Louis in 1969, where they joined Centennial Christian Church. There, they’ve been elders, deacons, choir members, and more. Gary managed housing for low-income seniors. Jeanette helped lead a food ministry that flourished even during the pandemic and finds purpose teaching, visiting the sick, and offering quiet encouragement. Though their service often takes different forms, they always support each other. “We’re blessed,” Gary said. Jeanette added, “Never underestimate the power of a smile.”
A key goal of The Grapevine is to promote a positive view of aging and the opportunities it affords for the maintenance of a high-quality lifestyle and service in retirement. Toward that end, we introduced the Eighty Eighty Plus Grapevine Servant Leadership Recognition Program in the 2021, 30th Anniversary issue of the Grapevine newsletter.
Eighty Eighty Plus is all about celebrating servant leaders, 80 years and older, who are actively engaged in ministry at the local, regional, or national levels of the denomination. By sharing their stories of successful aging and continuing service in retirement, we provide hope and encouragement for “younger” retirees: “It’s not over once you hit 80!” and for older retirees: “Just keep going - with God’s grace you, too, can make a difference!”
We invite you to nominate someone to join Eighty Eighty Plus! We are looking for older adults who make service to others a high priority while continuing to inspire, motivate, and demonstrate a loving supportive commitment to family, church, and community.
